In an effort to mend historical rifts and foster a more robust partnership, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed recently held discussions during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The meeting, which Pezeshkian characterized as optimistic, aims to pave the way for future collaboration between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The conversation is seen as a step towards easing regional tensions and enhancing cooperation on critical issues like security and shipping routes.

Furthering these diplomatic efforts, Iranian representatives plan to engage in talks with officials from Gulf countries and Iraq in Oman on September 14. The agenda will center on regional security and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with the goal of fostering better understanding and collective security measures among neighboring nations. Notably, Bahrain has opted out of participating in these discussions.

Beyond regional security concerns, President Pezeshkian also emphasized the importance of economic cooperation among BRICS nations. He advocated for increasing the use of national currencies in trade and developing more robust financial systems to shield emerging economies from political and economic pressures. Pezeshkian urged BRICS members to work towards greater economic resilience and to resist unilateral sanctions and attacks on civilian infrastructures.

The Iranian leader highlighted his country’s advantageous strategic location, rich energy resources, and extensive transit networks as assets that could significantly contribute to the development of trade and energy corridors linking BRICS economies. With tensions around the Strait of Hormuz persisting, these diplomatic and economic initiatives signify crucial steps toward ensuring regional stability and the security of global energy supplies.
