The absence of drama was deliberate — the less attention the decision attracted, the less public response it would generate.
The strategy appears to have worked, at least in the immediate term. While digital rights organizations and privacy advocates responded with alarm, the decision did not produce widespread public outrage or significant user churn from Instagram. Most users likely remain unaware that their DMs are about to lose — or have already lost — their technical privacy protection.
