“They’re Getting Close”: Trump Optimistic Ahead of Miami Talks

by admin477351

President Donald Trump is optimistic that a peace deal is close, but has warned Ukraine not to delay. Trump stated on Thursday that negotiators are “getting close to something” but urged swift action.

The comments come as a precursor to fresh talks in Miami this weekend. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to meet with a Russian delegation, following recent discussions with Ukraine in Berlin. The sequence of meetings highlights the administration’s active role in trying to broker a settlement.

Trump’s primary worry is the volatility of Russian decision-making. “I hope Ukraine moves quickly,” he said, noting that “Russia changes their mind” when counterparts take too much time. This pressure tactic aims to push Kyiv toward a definitive agreement.

However, the terms of such an agreement remain fraught with difficulty. Ukraine continues to reject any scenario involving the cession of territory, specifically the Donbas. Russia stands equally firm, demanding territorial concessions as a prerequisite for peace.

At present, Russia holds Crimea and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. Moscow insists on a Ukrainian withdrawal from the Donbas region to end the fighting. With US officials noting a lack of compromise from the Russian side, Trump’s urgency highlights the high stakes.
