Trump-Taiwan Call May Impact U.S.-China Trade and Economic Relations

China has issued a warning to the United States regarding careful handling of issues related to Taiwan after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to speak with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. The prospect of direct communication between a U.S. president and Taiwan’s leadership is particularly sensitive for Beijing, as China views Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory and fiercely opposes any official foreign interactions with the island’s government.

Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province that should ultimately reunite with the mainland, using force if deemed necessary. The Chinese government consistently opposes any actions by foreign nations that treat Taiwan as an independent state and frequently criticizes diplomatic engagements with Taipei at high levels. Chinese officials have cautioned that such interactions send “wrong signals” to those who support Taiwan’s independence and are seen as interference in China’s domestic matters.

In recent years, tensions surrounding Taiwan have heightened. In 2022, China conducted extensive military exercises in the vicinity of Taiwan following a visit by a senior U.S. official. Additionally, Beijing has responded strongly to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and American political backing of the island. Meanwhile, Taiwan asserts its identity as a self-governing democracy officially named the Republic of China, rejecting Beijing’s claims of sovereignty. The Taiwanese government maintains that its citizens have the right to elect their leaders and establish international relationships.

The United States adheres to the “One China” policy, which involves diplomatic recognition of Beijing while maintaining unofficial relations with Taiwan. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, the U.S. also provides Taiwan with defensive weapons. In a previous instance of direct communication, Trump spoke with former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, an action that was met with criticism from China. Should Trump proceed with a call to Lai, it could exacerbate the already strained U.S.-China relations and potentially provoke new Chinese military maneuvers near Taiwan.
